Drones are taking over the dangerous task of obtaining images and footage of volcanic activity. It is very challenging for researchers to reach certain areas of a volcano safely. Drones can give researchers access to material that will further their studies in volcanology.
The drone is equipped with two different cameras. One takes thermal images, and the other takes high-resolution photos. From these photos, they can create detailed 3D models to understand the lava movement better.
"We flew the drone over the crater at various intervals, measuring the movements of lava flow and a lava dome using a specific type of stereo photography with a precision never seen before," says Edgar Zorn from the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ.
Drones will give researchers a safer way to explore the measurement of ground movements, the flow of lava, and get closer without risk of harm. Researchers will use these drones to save themselves and other inhabitants from future explosions. Source: Link
