Soft Gripper Robot Effortlessly Manipulates Cables

Soft Gripper Robot Plugs Cord Into Jack
Scientists have created a soft gripper that can easily handle cables. It is challenging for many robots to control cables because of gauging how tightly to hold them, how much force is needed to pull them, and knowing how to adjust their movements continuously. This robotic arm makes these complicated jobs simple.

The gripper has a GleSight sensor that helps it react instantly to required changes in pressure, speed, and position. The flexible gripper uses a "hand over hand" method to get to the end of a cable and inserts plugs into jacks.

"Manipulating soft objects are common in our daily lives. We would like to have robots help humans, especially when the tasks are repetitive, dull, or unsafe," says Yu She, MIT postdoc.

Soft grippers can help to restructure the way people perform tedious tasks in the auto, medical, and engineering fields to make work faster and more productive.
